While playing in the team of Dunfermline Athletic, Hardie scored 8 goals for the club in winning their first title in the Scottish First Division in 2011. He scored a crucial final minute strike to beat Ross County in a 1-0 win, as well as two goals that beat Raith Rovers 2-1 in the final game for the title. He kicked off his second season at Dunfermline by scoring a 30-yard top corner free kick. Hardie began his career with Queen’s Park in 1996, then he went on to play for eight clubs, including two stints in Partick Thistle and also playing for both sides of Airdrieonians.
When he joined St Johnstone, Hardie was suspended for the team’s opening game of the season 2006-07. Hardie made his debut for St Johnstone just three days later, scoring an assist in a 3-1 victory over East Fife in the League Cup. On the 27th of January, 2007 Hardie scored a late goal to secure second place St Johnstone against top-of-the-table Gretna at McDiarmid Park. The win narrowed the gap between Gretna and Saints to nine points, and Saints beat Gretna into the final day of the race for championship. Hardie received the Division One Player of Month award for March 2007. Hardie was also the one to score Saints their only goal in the 2-1 loss against Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi final played in April 2007.
In July 2012, Hardie signed for Greenock Morton. He was released at the end of the season. On 18 July 2013 Martin Hardie signed for Airdrieonians on a 1-year contract however he left the club in January 2014, retiring from professional football.
