Martin Clive Atkins (born 3 August 1959) is an English session drummer and drummer who is best known for his work with industrial and post-punk bands like Public Image Ltd, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Pigface as well as Killing Joke. In addition, he is consultant as well as a writer of books and is the business of music programme coordinator for Millikin University in Decatur, IL. Atkins is an Honorary Board Member of the Chicago-based non-profit organization Rock For Kids.
After quitting Public Image Ltd, Atkins returned to Brian Brain, his Brian Brain project and recorded an EP at Planet Sound Studios in New York for his own limited-time label Plaid Records, which was released in July 1985. In the late 1980s, into the 1990s and the early 2000s, Atkins was a member of a variety of groups that included Nine Inch Nails (appearing in the video for “Head Like A Hole”) and Ministry. The double-drumming duo that was performed by Atkins as well as Bill Rieflin appears on the live Ministry album and video In Case You Didn’t Feel Like Showing up. Atkins then joined Killing Joke, performing on 1990s Extremities, Dirt, and Other Repressed Emotions. The band was also managed by him at the time, and also designed their live show the stage and merchandise.
Between 2000 and 2002 he released four albums as Opium Jukebox featuring instrumental cover tunes done in a Bhangra style.
In October 2006, Atkins visited Beijing to discover the emerging Chinese music scene. During his stay, Atkins recorded and signed a handful of Chinese bands to Invisible Records and recorded material for a new Pigface album.
Atkins returned to Public Image Ltd in 1981 to be a part of The Flowers of Romance and later, wrote and produced the album. The Album This is What You Are Looking For… This is The Album That You Receive. Atkins ended up leaving PiL for the final time in the year 1985.

Atkins His first big experience as a drummer came as a member of John Lydon’s post-Sex-Pistol group, Public Image Ltd. The band was formed in 1979 just in time to play on the track “Bad Baby” on the album Metal Box. Atkins’ first live performance performed with PiL has been recorded, and later released on an album of live performances Paris au Printemps and his first year with the band also included participation in The John Peel Sessions for the BBC, American Bandstand and the live BBC show Old Grey Whistle Test.
In the year 1980, Atkins left Public Image Ltd to focus on his own band Brian Brain with Pete Jones (who also was a member of Public Image Ltd in 1982 and 1983) on bass (in 1983, he was replaced by the Go-Gos’ original bassist Margot Olavarria) and Bobby Surgeoner on guitar (later replaced by the husband of Olavarria’s wife, Geoff Smyth). Brian Brain released six singles and one album (Unexpected Sounds) via Secret Records, and continued to release singles and albums on Atkins private label Plaid Records throughout the 1980s. The group had an minor indie chart success in 1980 , with “They’ve Got Me in the Bottle” (#39), and club hits through the singles “Jive Jive” (1981) and “Funky Zoo” (1982).
Atkins formed his industrial supergroup, Pigface, during a Ministry tour in 1989–1990. After joining Killing Joke for their 1990 recording, Extremities, Dirt and Various Repressed Emotions, he went on to form Murder, Inc., a new band featuring Geordie Walker and Paul Raven from Killing Joke, and Chris Connelly, in 1992. During this time, he played with the Revolting Cocks and is credited alongside Chris Vrenna in Nine Inch Nails for performing extra drums on “Wish” and “Gave Up,” tracks two and six of the Broken EP (as well as the aforementioned “Head Like A Hole”).
