Ph.D. in the field of law, from in the European University Institute in Florence in 1993.

Cartabia was appointed Judge of the Constitutional Court by the President of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, on the 2nd of September, 2011 and was sworn in on September 13, 2011. At the time she was appointed, she was among the youngest nominees to be appointed and the third woman to be appointed in the history of the Court. Her appointment as Vice President was announced by the Court on November 12, 2014. The 11th day of December in 2019 Cartabia was succeeded by Giorgio Lattanzi as President of the Constitional Court, becoming the first woman to be elected to the post. Cartabia got all 14 votes.

Cartabia was conferred the title of Knight Grand Cross in the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic on 24 October 2011.

In December 2017, she was appointed as a substitute member for Italy to the European Commission for Democracy through Law of the Council of Europe, also known as Venice Commission.
