Kanthak was born on the 13th of September the year 1958 at Torgau, Saxony; at the time it was part of East Germany. The school’s leader choir from the close by Arzberg, Klaus Muller, was also a coach in sport shooting . She was invited, at the age of 12 or 13 to attend an event in shooting which was where she discovered her talents. Competing for Gesellschaft fur Sport und Technik (GST)-Club Leipzig, her first international competition was in 1974 in Thun, Switzerland. As a 16 -year-old (the youngest of the 1000 athletes) she placed fourth in the 1974 World Championships in the women’s 50m rifle, three positions. In the year 1975, at the European Championships in Sofia, she took silver ahead of Anka Pelova, in the 50m rifle three positions. She also took home silver in the 60 lying position. Her impressive performance was the major reason for her to lead the East German women to win the team competition.
The year was 1978 when she got married to fellow shooter Hans-Jurgen Helbig. His husband would participate in the 1988 Summer Olympics where he placed 8th on the 50-metre mixed running goal. Both in 1978 and 1979 she was mentioned by the press as Marlies Helbig-Kanthak. Later, she was referred to in the year 1980, either under this double-barrel name or Marlies Helbig. In in 1981, she had been known by her husband’s name.
In April 1979, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided that women would first compete in their own shooting events in the 1984 Summer Olympics. As women were outperformed by men, East Germany did not nominate any women for the 1980 Summer Olympics.
At the March 1979 European Championships held at Graz, Austria, where competitions where held in air gun disciplines, Helbig won a bronze medal in the individual air rifle competition, and silver with the team in that event. At an international competition in Suhl, East Germany, Helbig equalled her 1977 world record in the 50 m rifle three positions event.
In the February 1977 European Championships held at Les Escaldes, Andorra, where the competitions were held in air gun disciplines Kanthak took home silver using the air rifle, and gold with the women’s squad. In September 1977, at the European Championships in Bucharest, Romania, Kanthak did not finish in the top ten athletes in the mixed 50-meter rifle prone competition, but was the top-ranked participant of East Germany. In October 1977, at the European Championships for women and juniors held in Rome, Italy, Kanthak was awarded three gold medals, in the 50-meter rifle prone event, in the 50 m rifle three-position event and in the third discipline, she was also part of female athletes. In the 50-meter rifle three positions event she surpassed Pelova’s world record by 2 rings to 582 points. To celebrate her accomplishment she was given the Ernst Schneller Medal in gold in December

Marlies Ray (nee Kanthak, then Helbig born 10 January, 1958) is a retired sports shooter who hails from East Germany. The two-time world champion was Marlies Ray.
In the 1996 European 10 m Events Championships in Paris, France, in February of 1976, Kanthak came third in the mixed event. She also became European champion for members of the team for juniors. Kanthak was a participant in for the 1976 Summer Olympics at Montreal, Canada, where she was so anxious that she couldn’t even see the goal properly. In the mixed 50-metre rifle three- position event, she was 32nd and in the 50-metre rifle mixed prone event she placed 51st. In the 1976 European Championships in Skopje, Yugoslavia, Kanthak was again beat to Pelova in the 50m rifle three-positions event However, the GDR women were able to win gold together as a team. The result of 1,772 rings made a record for the world. In the 50m rifle prone competition, Kanthak showed poor form and finished in fifth place as an individual, but he was able to win silver as a team.
At the February 1978 European Championships held at Copenhagen, Denmark, where competitions where held in air gun disciplines, Kanthak came seventh in the individual air rifle competition, and won silver with the team in that event. She competed under her married name Helbig at the 1978 European Championships for women and juniors in Hämeenlinna, Finland, in the 50 metre rifle three positions event and won a silver medal.
