Marlene Farrugia is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on July 24, 1966 in Żurrieq, Malta. Marlene Farrugia (born on July 24, 1965) is currently a Maltese Member of Parliament as well as the founding and then leader of the Democratic Party. She was a former part of both the Nationalist Party, with whom she ran in at the General Elections in 1996 and 1998. She was also a member of in 1998 and 1999, the Labour Party, with whom she was elected in 2013 and 2008 before quitting in 2015 and founding the Democratic Party in 2016.

After a series of disputes between members of the Labour Party, Farrugia tendered her resignation from the party on the 17th of November 2015, making her the only non-party member in the Maltese House of Representatives. She later established the Democratic Party becoming its first leader and the only sitting MP. The re-election she received to Parliament in the general election of 2017 was the first time she was elected MP from an outside party since. Her fight continued the sexism that were a part of Labour’s administration. Labour administration and was a strong supporter of protesters from civil society’s protest for justice and truth in April of 2018. She was critical of the government’s handling of the Egrant investigation, where attempts to cover up other corruption accusations under the rug. She resigned as the leader for the party on the 17th of January in the year 2017 and then resigned completely from the party in the year 2019.

Farrugia is well-known for her open-mindedness and is a vocal critic of her political party on many topics, including divorce reform as well as environmental issues, over-development as well as good governance. She describes her political orientation as a centre-left position, but she also has a strong influence from the tenets of her Roman Catholic faith (such as prior to the referendum of 2011 regarding the issue of divorce that she initially opposed due to religious reasons). She has also spoken out regarding the protection of the environment (particularly during the controversy relating with Malta’s American Institute of Malta) American Institute of Malta) and good governance. Farrugia first came onto the political arena in the year 1996 when she ran as an official candidacy (under her name Marlene Pullicino) for the Nationalist Party in that year’s Local Council elections and was elected, and served on the Zebbug Local Council between 1996 until 1999. She then ran for at the 1998 General Elections on the Nationalist Party ticket. She won 311 first-count votes in the fifth district of electoral representation, but she was not elected.

After the EU referendum on accession at the end of 2003, farrugia switched her loyalty towards her former party, the Labour Party. She was a candidate in at the 2009 General Elections on behalf of the Labour Party and was elected from the 5th electoral district, which garnered 3,375 first-counted votes. She was elected again from the same district again in 2013 securing 2,525 votes for first-counts.

On 4 December 2018, Farrugia urged the public to “stand up to bullies everywhere and at all times”, referring to the Parliamentary sitting during which Economy Minister Chris Cardona was heard threatening her and her partner Godfrey Farrugia by saying “Your turn will come”.
