Markolf Niemz studied physics at Heidelberg University and then bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego. In 1992, he submitted his PhD thesis on the construction of a pulse compressed Nd: YLF laser to study the plasma-induced ablation of tissue.

His research focuses on laser-tissue interactions, medical laser applications, electrical biosignals and patient monitoring. He was the first scientist worldwide to apply ultrashort laser pulses to dentistry for a painfree treatment of caries.
