Marko Vrzgula Biography

Marko Vrzgula is one of the most popular and richest Painter who was born on February 24, 1966 in Košice, Košice Region, Slovakia. Marko Vrzgula (born 24 February 1966, Kosice, Slovakia) is a Slovak artist who also organizes symposiums and exhibitions of painters.

He is involved in long-term cycles that last for several years. He abstracted the image during his research for his thesis Windows (Okna 1990-1991). A rotating foam cylinder defined the stripe compositions of the years long cycle Intersections (Prieniky,1993-2000). The artist employed the same aesthetic approach to repeating horizontal lines in his next cycle Bridges (Mosty 2004-2011) which he created the staccato grid using impressions of real wooden boards as well as pieces of the painting. Another of his cycles is called Movements and Spirals (Pohyby Spiraly, 2006-2012) in which we can observe the coloured pastes becoming increasingly dominant and create a pre-step for the most recent cycle of Vrzgula known as Pulsars (Pulzary 2011-2015).

Since 2004 Vrzgula is a freelance artist. He lives and works in Bratislava and in the village of Lúčky – near Ružomberok, located in the Liptov region.

Vrzgula is the author of the concept of the gallery GUBA (2004) as well as its manager. GUBA comprises nine individual venues altogether – amounting to approximately 2 400 m² of exhibition area. GUBA is an authentic space of contemporary architecture where the exhibited artworks communicate with people and the environment in their everyday reality. More than 50 Slovak and Czech artists have held long-term exhibitions of their works here.

He was one of the original members of the organization The Blue Pears [Modre Hrusky[Modre Hrusky] (1988).

Vrzgula was a student and was a graduate of in the Department of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava between 1985 to 1991. From 2002 – until 2004 he taught at the Department of Creative Arts and Art Education at the Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra.
