Winters made his return to the boxing ring during 2001 and after a previous disagreement from Promoter Frank Warren, joined John Breen’s gym in Belfast. After struggling to lift an opponent like Hatton, Winters returned at Welterweight, but a change in diet and training regimen allowed him to drop to light and then in December, he took on Graham Earl in an eliminator to win his British championship at Wembley Conference Centre. Earl had previously been unbeaten. Earl was victorious with a score of points. Winters had a drawn fight together with Martin Watson in October 2003 The two fought one year later in Glasgow Watson’s BBBofC Celtic title on the line; Watson won comfortably on points. This was Winters his final battle.

Winters also lost scores in the month of September against Junior Witter, but in December 1999, he fought against Ricky’s WBO Intercontinental crown in Liverpool. Hatton defeated him at the end of the fourth round, and Winters announced his decision to retire from boxing.

The native of Antrim, Winters first had great success as an amateur taking home his Irish National senior lightweight title in 1993. He also fought in the 1993 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Tampere and also winning an Olympic silver medal in 1994’s Commonwealth Games in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Winters was a professional for the first time in March of 1995 by winning a fight against Trevor Smith. After having won his first 11 fights, He was crowned British light Welterweight champion in October of 1997, after beating Carl Wright on points at the Sheffield Arena. Wright had surgery following the fight because of blood clots on his brain, but recovered. Winters was able to defend this title back in the month of February, against Bernard Paul, but lost it three months later , when he was defeated in the final round against Jason Rowland, the first loss of Winters career.
