Mark Patrick Sweeney (born October 26 1969) is an American former first baseman of Major League Baseball (MLB). He is most well-known for his skills as a pinch-hitter, which is where he is the second highest in all time pinch hits, with 175 and is the first player in the career pinch hit run hit with the number 102.

Sweeney made his debut in the major leagues on the fourth of August in 1995 as the primary first baseman with the St. Louis Cardinals against the Chicago Cubs. He did not score a hit in four games in his first major league appearance. He scored his very first Major League hit following day in the face of Cubs starting pitcher Jim Bullinger. He scored the first of his home runs on the 10th of August in the game against Los Angeles Dodgers’ Hideo Nomo.

He remained with the Cards until 1997 when he was traded to the San Diego Padres, along with Danny Jackson and Rich Batchelor, for Fernando Valenzuela, Phil Plantier and Scott Livingstone. He went 2 for 3 as a pinch hitter for the Padres in the 1998 World Series against the New York Yankees, making the last out of the Series by grounding out to third base.

Sweeney spent one season with the Reds organization, much of which was spent with the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians. The Reds traded him on January 14, 2000, to the Milwaukee Brewers, along with Gene Altman, for Alex Ochoa. He spent the next two seasons with the Brewers shuttling between the Majors and Triple-A while battling through an assortment of injuries and trips to the disabled list.

Sweeney was selected to play quarterback for the University of Maine in Orono. In Orono, he made the decision to continue playing baseball all-time. He became the Golden Spikes Finalist, playing outfield and breaking many of the school’s record-breaking offensive records. As a senior in the year 1991 He scored .384 by hitting 23 homers and eighty RBI as well as 22 bases stolen over 65 games. His impressive season was rewarded with his America East Player of the Award for the Year.

Sweeney was a student at Holliston High School located in Holliston, Massachusetts and was an athlete and student in baseball and football. As a baseball player, he was able to coach his team to win winning the 1996 Massachusetts State Championship. He also played for his football team with his quarterback position to the state championship, and also won in the Tri- Valley League and a Superbowl in 1985.

With the Angels organization he played for the Quad Cities River Bandits (1992), Palm Springs Angels (1993), Midland Angels (1993-1994) and Vancouver Canadians (1994-1995). On July 8, 1995, he was traded by the Angels to the St. Louis Cardinals for John Habyan. After playing in 22 games for the Triple-A Louisville Redbirds his contract was purchased by the Cardinals on August 4.
