Mark Stephen Schweiker (born January 31st 1953) is an American politician and businessman who was governor for 44 years in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from October 5, 2001 until January 21 the year 2003. Schweiker is was a Republican was elected the governor of Pennsylvania in 2001, after prior to him, Tom Ridge, resigned to become the Homeland Security Advisor of Bush. George W. Bush. Schweiker is currently Renmatix’s SVP and chief relationship officer at Renmatix.

Schweiker’s most well-known contribution as governor was at the end of July in 2002 in his involvement in the Quecreek Mine rescue that took place in Somerset County, when he personally supervised the 77-hour rescue operation which saved the lives of the nine coal miners who were trapped in mine Quecreek mine. After this rescue operation, Schweiker implemented a series of new safety protocols to ensure better protection for miners.

Schweiker left office when his term expired on January 21, 2003. He became president and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce in February 2003 and served until 2009 when he announced his resignation to join Philadelphia-area pharmaceutical manufacturer PRWT as president of business process outsourcing. Schweiker is also a consultant to the law firm of Stradley Ronon.

Schweiker was named to the PoliticsPA list of “Sy Snyder’s Power 50” list of influential individuals in Pennsylvania politics in 2003.

Schweiker was deciding against a run for governor’s office in 2002, and was planning to complete his term at the time of it was September 11, 2001, when the terrorist attack took place. Ridge was removed as governor on the 5th of October 2001, and joined in the Bush administration in the role of Homeland Security Advisor.

Schweiker was first elected to politics in 1979, when he won a run for the position of supervisor in Middletown Township. In 1987 the election, he became Bucks County Commissary. Schweiker along with his fellow Republican Andrew Warren overturned a Democratic majority of the board, mostly due to their the opposition to a water project proposed to be built at Point Pleasant.
