Chosen as a NASA astronaut by NASA on May 14, 1984. Brown was a NASA astronaut by June of 1985. He also was able to be assigned as a mission expert on the upcoming Space Shuttle flight crews. In December 1985 Brown became part of the STS-61N crew which was a Department of Defense mission which was then cancelled because of the Challenger catastrophe. Between 1986 and 1987 Brown was an astronaut of the redesign of the solid rocket booster team. The team was formed in February of 1988. Brown got assigned to the newly formed flight team. Brown was with STS-28 (August 8-13 1989) Then Brown was an astronaut of the Space Station Freedom Program. The next time he flew was STS-48 (September 12-18 1991). At the end the second flight Brown had completed more than the span of 249 hours space.
Brown next flew on the crew of STS-48 aboard the orbiter Discovery which was launched from Kennedy Space Center on September 12, 1991. This was a five-day mission during which the crew deployed the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) which is designed to provide scientists with their first complete data set on the upper atmosphere’s chemistry, winds and energy inputs. The crew also conducted numerous secondary experiments ranging from growing protein crystals to studying how fluids and structures react in weightlessness. The mission was accomplished in 81 orbits of the Earth and concluded with a landing at Edwards Air Force Base on September 18, 1991.
Brown left NASA in July 1993 and retired from the U.S. Air Force to head the Space Division office of General Research Corporation in Dayton, Ohio.
Brown worked at his position at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in the year 1980. He was a member of the engineering team within the Flight Activities Section, he was involved in the creation of contingency plans for use on the Space Shuttle and served as an attitude and the pointing officer. Brown assisted with STS flights 2, 3, 4 6 and 41-C within the Support for Flight Officers/Staff room of the Mission Control Center.

Mark Neil Brown (born November 18th 1951) is an American engineer retired colonel from the United States Air Force and an ex- NASA astronaut. Brown was a part of 10 days in space during two five-day missions.
After graduating at Purdue at the end of 1973 Brown received a commission as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force and was awarded the pilot’s wings in Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas in 1974. Brown was later transferred to the 87th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base, Michigan in which he was piloted by two aircraft, the T-33 along with F-106 aircraft. Brown completed his studies at his Squadron Officer School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama in 1975. He was transferred to U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio and was awarded a master’s degree in aerospace engineering in the year 1980. A year later He graduated in the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.
On his first space flight, Brown was a mission specialist on the crew of STS-28. The orbiter Columbia was launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on August 8, 1989. The mission carried Department of Defense payloads and a number of secondary payloads. After 80 orbits of the Earth, this five-day mission concluded with a dry lakebed landing on Runway 17 at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on August 13, 1989.
