On April 2, 2007 Mallory attempted to pitch the opening pitch of his team’s Cincinnati Reds’ game on Opening Day. In spite of claims that he been training in his University of Cincinnati baseball team the pitch soared thirty feet from the first home plate’s base but terribly missed its intended field, Eric Davis. The ball landed on the feet of umpire Sam Holbrook, who ejected Mallory before the match started. The pitch garnered nationwide media attention (including spots for Good Morning America and Cold Pizza) as well as Mallory had the chance to redeem himself during the ABC show Jimmy Kimmel Live!, however, he failed to get any closer to the target in his throw. The pitch was deemed the opportunity to throw a “second, second-chance” and eventually tossed the ball towards star Kurt Russell. Mallory used this incident as an occasion to talk about Cincinnati’s positive aspects.

Before his 2005 election He was an assistant Minority Leader in the Ohio Senate. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1994, after replacing his father, who had was forced to retire after having served the district for over 30 years. He was a member of the Ohio House from 1995 to 1998, after which his election to the Senate.

In November 1998 Mark Mallory was elected to represent the 9th Senate District in the Ohio General Assembly, and in 2002, he was elected for a second term of four years. He served as Vice Minority Leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus during his seven years in the General Assembly. In 2003 Senator Mallory adopted a resolution at the General Assembly ratifying the 14th Amendment 135 years after its amendment in that of the US Constitution.

Mallory resigned his senate seat in 2005 to run for Mayor of Cincinnati. He defeated fellow Democrat David Pepper to win the election. Mallory was elected to a second term as Mayor on November 3, 2009.
