Huismann started his 1984 campaign with the Royals However, after going 0-2 and an 6.75 ERA in thirteen appearances the Royals sent him back to triple-A Omaha. He proved to be much more effective when he was back in July, posting a 3-1 record in his first three games, with an 2.79 ERA and three saves during the remainder of the season. The only postseason appearance in match one in the 1984 American League Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers.
With Dan Quisenberry in his prime, there was little room for a closer on the Royals. On May 21, 1986, he was traded to the Seattle Mariners for catcher Terry Bell. He made his only career start for the M’s on July 21 against the Toronto Blue Jays. He was pulled in the fourth inning after having surrendered six runs (5 earned), and took the loss. Otherwise, he spent the rest of the season in a lefty/righty platoon with Matt Young closing games for Seattle. Huismann finished fourteen games, picking up four saves.
He appeared in just six games for the Mariners in 1987 before being dealt to the Cleveland Indians for outfielder Dave Gallagher. He was 2-3 with two saves and a 5.09 ERA for the Indians when he was optioned down to the triple A Buffalo Bisons on July 15.
After four years in the minors in which he posted his record at 20-15, that included 49 stops and an 2.29 earned run-adjusted average Huismann made his first major league appearance in August of 1983 in the game against the Detroit Tigers. He drove home in his parent in their car to the game and nearly didn’t make it because the car was got hot three times on the route towards Royals Stadium. He was able to start into the action in the 5th with runners on the first and third with two outs, Huismann got the fly ball to right center by cleanup batter Lance Parrish to end the threat. The Royals went on a rout for 9 runs during the 7th inning to win for Huismann’s debut.

Huismann was born in Littleton, Colorado, and went to Colorado State University after graduating at Thomas B. Doherty High School in Colorado Springs. After his 21st birthday, he received a call to the Chicago Cubs in the 23rd round of the 1979 Major League Baseball Draft, but he didn’t make a decision to sign. After being unable to be drafted in the year 1980’s Major League Baseball Draft, his contract was signed by the Kansas City Royals as an amateur free agent.
Huismann pitched for all or parts of nine seasons with the majors for six teams from 1983 to 1991. Although he played in parts of nine years in major leagues Huismann played for more than 20 games in the majors only three times. He also spent more time playing in minor leagues than in the major leagues almost each season (1986 is the sole one in which there was no time in the minor leagues). In 1992, he had his final season in baseball with Omaha Royals. Omaha Royals.
Despite this progress, he did not make the Royals’ roster for 1985. Instead, he compiled an American Association record 33 saves for the Omaha Royals to earn Pitcher of the Year honors. He received a call-up to the majors when rosters expanded that September, and was 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in nine games, but was not part of the Royals’ post season roster.
