Hall’s academic work focuses on the issue of religion during the American founding period. Particularly, his work is usually concerned with the idea that the Founders were deists who wanted the strict separation between state and church. He argues instead that there are valid grounds to believe that many of the Founders were inspired by traditional Christianity and that virtually all would have favored anything that resembled modern understandings of the distinction between state and church. Hall claims that this has affected the way it is interpreted by the Supreme Court has interpreted the religious clauses in the First Amendment.
