Callahan has two daughters, and divorced in 2013. His ex-wife, Sherry, supported his 2014 U.S. Senate campaign.

Callahan was a candidate for Oregon House of Representatives, but was unsuccessful in securing the nomination of the Independent Party of Oregon before getting the nomination of the Pacific Green Party, in what he later admitted is an attempt steal off votes of his Democratic incumbent Nancy Nathanson, in an effort to help the Republican candidate win. The effort was not successful.
