Mark Bramble (December 7, 1950 until February 20th 2019,) was an American theatre director as well as an author and producer. Bramble was nominated to the Tony Award three times, for the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for Barnum and 42nd Street (1981) and Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical 42nd Street (2001).

He was the director and co-librettist during the revival in 2001 of 42nd Street featuring songs written by Harry Warren and Al Dubin as well as co- author of the book that was written for the first 42nd Street in the year 1980 and was written in 1980 by David Merrick. He directed numerous performances that featured 42nd Street, in London, Sydney, Shanghai, Tokyo, Amsterdam and Vienna. The latest London production was recorded for Broadway HD and will air on PBS in the fall of the year 2019.

Bramble died unexpectedly at his home in Maryland on February 20, 2019.

Bramble wrote the libretto , and composed the music, with direction composed by Henry Krieger, for the musical Fat Pig, which premiered at the Haymarket Theatre, in Leicester, England, in November 1987. The musical is an extravagant rock and roll show about health and wellness, built on the Colin McNaughton book about farmyard life and its dangers. The musical was adapted by the director and staged Notre Dame (1991) at The Lillian Bayliss Theatre at Saddler’s Wells, London.

Bramble participated in production, writing, and directing of stage musicals throughout the globe. He started his stage career as an apprentice in David Merrick’s studio in 1971 and was involved in numerous Broadway productions. As an author, his projects included the musical Barnum that was the first to introduce Glenn Close as a musical actor, with music composed by Cy Coleman and Michael Stewart. He also wrote the script of The Three Musketeers (1984) with music by Rudolph Friml.

He co-produced together with Michael Stewart on many shows which included The Grand Tour (1978) with music composed by Jerry Herman, Pieces of Eight which was a musical adaptation to Treasure Island with songs by Jule Styne, and the off Broadway opera Elizabeth & Essex based on Maxwell Anderson’s Elizabeth The Queen, and was an assistant in the musical Mack and Mabel.

In 2017, he published a book entitled “A Tea Caddy Collection”, which displayed his vast collection of antique tea caddies in catalog form, with history and narration chapters to accompany. The location and subsequent ownership of this collection upon his death are still uncertain.
