Mark Abene is one of the most popular and richest Software Developer who was born on February 23, 1972 in New York, United States. Mark T. Abene (born on February 23, 1972) is an American businessman and expert in infosec born in New York City. He is more well-known as the pseudonym Phiber Optik Abene, he was part of the hacker organizations Legion of Doom and Masters of Deception.
According to the newsletter dated July 9, 1992 issued by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the defendants were facing a maximum sentence which was 50 years prison, and penalties that ranged from $2.5 million if they were found guilty of all charges. Even though Abene was minor when the offenses were being committed, he was involved only in a tiny fraction of the charges, and usually as a passive participant the plea agreement led to the most severe punishment of 12 months in prison as well as three years of probation. the requirement of 600 hours community service.
After serving the one-year sentence at the Federal Prison “Camp” in Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, Abene was released in November 1994. In January 1995, a huge celebration called “Phiberphest ’95” was held in his honor at Manhattan’s Irving Plaza ballroom/nightclub. In Time, Joshua Quittner called him “the first underground hero of the Information Age, the Robin Hood of cyberspace.” Upon leaving jail, Phiber Optik made the @Cafe his hang out spot.
After some years as a security consultant, he joined forces with former Legion of Doom member Dave Buchwald and a third colleague, Andrew Brown, to create the security consulting firm Crossbar Security. Crossbar provided consulting services for third party companies, during which the principals conducted business in the U.S., Japan, Brazil, and Sweden. As a result of the “dot com” bust Crossbar ultimately went defunct in 2001, largely due to cuts in corporate security spending.
On the 24th of January of 1990, Abene and other MOD members were searched in their homes and their property confiscated at the request of authorities from the U.S. Secret Service largely due to government suspicions of causing AT&T Corporation’s network to crash one week prior on the 15th of January (Abene was personally blamed in authorities from the Secret Service of having done the same, in the search and seizing). Then, a few weeks later AT&T acknowledged that the failure was the result of a faulty software update to their switching systems that they use for their long-distance networks, which was a human error from their side. In February of 1991, Abene was arrested and was charged with computer tampering as well as computer trespassing in the first level, New York state offenses. At the time, laws were viewed as to be a “gray area” concerning information security. Abene was in the age of minor when he was arrested, was able to plead “not guilty” to the initial two charges and signed a plea bargain to the lesser misdemeanor offense and was sentenced the community for 35 hours.

The main goal of the group was the exploration of telecom systems, minicomputers, mainframe operating systems, as well as huge-scale data packet networks. The eventual demise of the LOD in the latter half of the 1980s, primarily due to division and dissension in the organization, along with the legal repercussions of a small number members, led Abene to become more aligned with a small group of new hackers, who would later come to be called”the Masters of Deception (MOD).
Learning about the basics of programming and security in those early years, Abene further honed his ability to comprehend the complexities of the nation- wide phone network. In the mid-1980s , he first introduced to the Legion of Doom (LOD) which was a loosely knit group of highly respected teenager hackers, who shared the firm determination to learn about the technology.
Abene and four other members of the Masters of Deception were also arrested in December 1991 and indicted by a Manhattan federal grand jury on July 8, 1992, on an 11-count charge. The indictment relied heavily on evidence collected by court-approved wire tapping of telephone conversations between MOD members. According to U.S. Attorney Otto Obermaier, it was the “first investigative use of court-authorized wiretaps to obtain conversations and data transmissions of computer hackers” in the United States.
