Mario Silva (born June 11 1996) was a Canadian legal scholar who was a former politician. Silva was the Canadian Member of Parliament from 2004 until the year 2011. His political career began as an Toronto City Councillor from 1994-2003. He later moved to federal politics after being elected by The Liberal Party of Canada in 2004 in the Toronto district of Davenport. He was also the Official of the Opposition’s Critic on the Department of Foreign Affairs (Americas) following having been a critic in Labour, the Treasury Board and Labour. In 2007 The President of the French Republic bestowed him with the designation of Knight of the Order of the Legion of Honour (Ordre national de la Legion of Honour). He also received with the Order of Merit of Portugal. as well as The Order of Rio Branco from Brazil.

Silva has an B.A. with a major in Political Science in the University of Toronto, a “Certificat de Langue Francaise” from Paris-Sorbonne University, and a master’s degree in International Human Rights Law from University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. Silva is an Ph.D. from the Faculty of Law at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Silva’s Ph.D. thesis is entitled “Failed and Failing States: Causes and Conditions.” On December 15, 2011 the The Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed him to be the chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (formally the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research (ITF)) in 2013. In 2013, he was a distinguished fellow of Law and Business at Ryerson University in Toronto.

Silva was the chairman of an inquiry committee of the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition Counter Antisemitism (CPCCA) CPCCA, an MPs’ group with a broad spectrum of political views that conducted an investigation of antisemitism across Canada. Silva was vice-chair of CPCCA’s steering group, which hosted the first international antisemitic conference held in Ottawa in 2010.
