Marina Nemat is one of the most popular and richest Author who was born on April 22, 1965 in Tehran, Iran. Nemat’s maternal grandparents were both Russian as well as she was raised in the Russian Orthodox Christian family in Tehran. Both of her grandmothers together with their Iranian spouses who they had got married prior to their marriages during the Russian Revolution of 1917, left Russia in Iran in the huge wave of immigration which had begun. Her father was dance instructor and her mother worked as hairdresser. She was a student at high school at the time that the secular monarchy of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was overthrown by Ayatollah Khomeini’s Islamic Revolution. When she was a student Marina Nemat opposed the oppressive policies of the new Islamic government. She attended protests and wrote anti- revolutionary essays in a student-run newspaper.
Marina Nemat was awarded the first Human Dignity Prize in December 2007. This award is set to be awarded each year from the European Parliament and the Cultural Association Europa 2004. This Human Dignity Prize “celebrates organizations and individuals working for a world free from intolerance and social injustice, a world where fundamental human rights are respected.” It was stated by the Prize Committee said that Nemat was selected “because of her strength of character despite her life experiences.”
Her book Prisoner of Tehran has been published by 27 publishing houses around the world (2012). In April 2012, a theatre adaptation of the book was staged at the Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto under the direction of Maja Ardal. In 2014, Nemat also collaborated with Motus O dance theatre to create a multi- disciplinary work based upon the memoir consisting of “a combination of the spoken word, movement, video and music.” In November 2016 the production was performed at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
Today, Nemat teaches memoir writing part-time at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies, and regularly speaks about her experiences in front of high-school classes, universities, libraries and associations. She is a regular participant in the Oslo Freedom Forum. In 2012 she was a guest speaker at the San Francisco Freedom Forum of the Human Rights Foundation along with Aung San Suu Kyi and Garry Kasparov.
Nemat later married Andre Nemat. They moved back to Canada in 1991. They are parents to two boys. Nemat was employed by The Aurora Franchise from the Swiss Chalet restaurant chain, and also wrote her account in just 78,000 words. Nemat was aware of the fact that many of the victims didn’t want to discuss their fate.

She was detained inside the notorious Evin Prison well known for crimes against prisoners of political convictions and was sentenced to death. She was saved by a guard in the prison and was also able to obtain a the commutation of her sentence, which was life in prison. After five months of confinement it was evident that Ali was developing an attraction to Nemat intent on forcing her to get married. Nemat eventually did marry the guard, and was later released from prison. He was later murdered.
In 2010, Nemat published another book, After Tehran: A Life Reclaimed.
