Marilou Diaz-Abaya is one of the most popular and richest Film Director who was born on March 30, 1955 in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. Diaz was born in Quezon City in the year 1955. She was the seventh child born to attorneys Conrado Diaz as well as Felicitas Correa Diaz. She was raised in a very privileged household. Her father hails born in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, and she is closely related to Valentin Diaz who was one of the founder signatories of 1892’s nationalist group La Liga Filipina with Jose Rizal who her famous film was dedicated to.
Jesse Ejercito gave Diaz-Abaya the chance to create film, and Diaz-Abaya urged her to use Ricky Lee, whom she has only heard of but never met, be a screenplay scriptwriter for the film. Ricky Lee would then be identified as one of Diaz Abaya’s collaborators on film, and also as the screenplay author for many of Diaz-Abaya’s films. Lee and Diaz-Abaya’s initial collaboration was to make Brutal which debuted during the Metro Manila Film Festival in 1980. Brutal was a hit and Ishmael Bernal who is a highly-respected Filipino filmmaker watched the film and was interested in meeting Diaz-Abaya. Bernal became Diaz-Abaya’s teacher. In the wake of her breakthrough with Brutal her next project was Macho Gigolo.
She entered the Philippine cinema industry in 1980 as a feminist director, yet she recalled growing up in a gender-free atmosphere. Diaz-Abaya’s films are known for the struggles of the marginalized, and yet she never thought of a career in filmmaking while growing up in private Catholic schools for the elite.
Her early films Brutal, Karnal (Of the Flesh), and Alyas Baby Tsina, sharply condemn the oppressive social system during the administration of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos. When the Marcos was deposed in 1986, Diaz left filmmaking.
In the 1980s, Lily Monteverde, a prominent Filipino film producer at Regal productions, contacted Diaz-Abaya to produce Sensual (Of the senses) which was a coming of age movie that dealt with sexuality issues. It was released one day prior to it was the year of EDSA Revolution.

Marilou Diaz-Abaya (March 30, 1955 – October 8 12th, 2012) was an award- winning film director who was from the Philippines. She was the president and founder of the Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film Institute and Arts Center which was a film school that is based within Antipolo City, Philippines. Her film was directed by the Jose Rizal film, which was biographical documentary about the Philippines the nation’s hero. She was a part of the Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema.
One of the events that led Diaz-Abaya’s career to film was application to study Communication Arts in the Assumption Convent. She had planned to take up Asian Civilizations studies, but could not due to the fact that the History Department was closed. In the end, she decided to enroll in Communication Arts and intended to remain for just one semester, but she kept her passion for acting in theater was not a problem. While in college she was a stage director for the Cultural Center of the Philippines. In college, she had the opportunity make her debut film. She attended a variety of schooling institutions (at St. Theresa’s College from Kindergarten through High School) and graduated of Assumption College with a degree in Bachelor of Arts majoring in Communications Arts in the year 1976. She then went back to Los Angeles for further studies and graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a diploma with a Master’s degree in Arts of Film and Television in 1978. She went on back to London to complete the Film Course at the London International Film School as well in 1978.
Díaz directed and released her first feature film, Tanikala (Chains) in 1980. Since then, she has been one of the most active and visible directors in Philippine cinema.
