Marie Elizabeth Harf (born June 15th January 1981) is the deputy campaign manager in charge of communication and policy for Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) presidential campaign. She was previously an expert on liberal politics at The Fox News Channel. Harf was the senior Advisor for Strategic Communications to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at the United States Department of State, responsible for an Iran nuclear negotiations’ communication strategy. Harf was also the acting Spokesperson and Deputy Spokesperson for the State Department.

In April 2015 Bloomberg News reported that retiring U.S. Navy Rear Admiral John Kirby would soon be named Spokesperson of the Department of State, replacing Spokesperson in interim Marie Harf, who had been interviewed for the job. As of 2013, Kirby had also beaten out Harf to be the spokesperson within the U.S. Department of Defense under Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, thereby being able to keep the Pentagon position with a currently serving and skilled military public affairs officer opposed to a civilian appointed.

Harf was the Acting Spokesperson from May 13 to 2015, and then on June 1st, 2015, Harf took on a new position as the Senior Advisor on Strategic Communications to Secretary of State John Kerry, continuing her task of directing Kerry’s Iran nuclear negotiations’ communication strategy. In January of 2017, she was dismissed by the White House and became a political commentator for Fox News Channel. In May the year 2020, she was sacked from the channel to become an Executive Director for an organization called the Progressive Serve America PAC, founded by the former Presidential presidential candidate Seth Moulton (D-Mass. ).

In response to questioning from Matthews on the U.S.’s strategy toward ISIS, Harf said, “We cannot kill our way out of this war. We need in the medium to longer term to go after the root causes that leads people to join these groups, whether it’s a lack of opportunity for jobs, whether …” Her critics ridiculed her on social media with the hashtag “#JobsForISIS”, which became a top 10 trending topic on U.S. Twitter.
