Over the course of her 23-year tenure as an official Member of the European Parliament she was re-elected five times. She was a member of the Parliament’s Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection as well as been a substitute in members of the Committee on International Trade, was an active member of the Delegation to the EU-Ukraine parliamentary Cooperation Committee and also a substitute for Delegation to the Joint EU-Turkey Parliamentary Committee. Between 1999 and 2014, she was head in the EPP’s (EPP) Belgian delegation and between 2004 and 2009 was elected the first vice-president for the EPP.

Born in Sint-Gillis-Waas in Flemish-speaking family that is not related to the Baron’s family. Thyssen, Thyssen graduated from the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) in 1979, earning an academic diploma in law. She was an adviser to the legal department of the Belgian group for self-employed as well as small and medium-sized enterprises UNIZO and the women’s group Christelijke Middenstands- en Burgervrouwen (CMBV) which is now Markant director, and of UNIZO in 1991, and then acting Secretary-General UNIZO at the beginning of 1991. In 1986-1988, she was the an adviser to the state secretary responsible for the public health sector and policy on disability.

Since 1991 Thyssen was elected a member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Flanders as part of the CD&V which is known as the Flemish Christian Democrats in Belgium and took over the position of Karel Pinxten [nl], who was transferred into the Belgian Senate. Between 1995 and 2008, she was a an Oud- Heverlee municipal councillor. an area of the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant and in 2001 she was elected First Alderman of Oud-Heverlee. In her role as a councillor local to the municipality,, she decided to focus on matters of social concern like childcare and the care of elderly people. In 2008, Thyssen was elected the leader of CD&V party.

In 2014 she was appointed to the European Commission as Commissioner in charge of Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility for the European Union (EU).
