Marian Munteanu (born 19 June 1962 located in Gradistea, Comana, Giurgiu) was a past leader in the protests against the government that were held in 1989 in Romania and were quelled violently through the intervention of miner’s group (the Mineriad). In the early 1990s, he also served as the head of the extreme- right political group “Miscarea pentru Romania” (The movement for Romania).

In 2016, Munteanu launched a new political group to contest the Parliamentary elections.

In 2011, he taught the subjects of ethnology, anthropology and folklore in the University of Bucharest.

Munteanu was the head in the Student’s League who was among the organizers for the demonstrations that protested the rule of Ion Iliescu. On June 14th the 14th of June, 1990, he suffered brutally beaten. An unemployed miner is later detained for attempted murder in response to witnesses’ claims that he tried to take down Munteanu by axing him. He was detained and arrested by Jilava in the period between June 18 and August 2 1990.

As the leader in the group “Miscarea pentru Romania” (defunct since 1996) He wrote a number of pieces expressing his admiration of Romania’s Iron Guard, a local fascist group that was active prior to World War II. In the end, he was accused of antisemitism by a variety of public figures, most notably the criticism of literature by Nicolae Manolescu. in 2000 Munteanu has been positioned as an president-elect by the party headed by Virgil Magureanu, former Securitate officer and the first head of the Romanian Intelligence Service, though Munteanu eventually resigned his name from consideration.

Munteanu made a comeback into politics in 2016 after accepting National Liberal Party’s proposal as candidate for mayor of Bucharest for that year’s local elections. The proposal was regarded as controversial at best, coming after the previous candidate, Ludovic Orban, was withdrawn as a result of his prosecution for corruption by the National Anticorruption Directorate. Soon after, documents surfaced on the Internet indicating Munteanu as a former collaborator of the Securitate, Nicolae Ceaușescu’s secret police, having signed an agreement for furnishing information and being paid for. He was approached by the secret police after he became a confidante of Petre Țuțea, with the purpose of keeping under surveillance the former anticommunist. Munteanu refused to sign an official proof of integrity document, as required to candidates for public positions. Several organizations and even the National Liberal Party have filed official requests with the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS), to check the ties he might have had with the Securitate before 1989. Following public outcry, the National Liberals decided to drop him as party candidate.
