Maria Mourani (born May 19 1969) is a Canadian politician who was elected an independent member of the Parliament for the federal district in Ahuntsic located in Canada. She was previously a part of the Bloc Quebecois before leaving the party because of its support of the proposed Quebec Charter of Values. She was a member of with the New Democratic Party in November 2014. She was not part of the caucus because of the party’s policy to not cross the floor. She also voted on behalf of NDP NDP during this year’s Canadian national election. However, she failed to get elected. Mourani became the first person from Lebanese origin to be elected into be a member of the Canadian House of Commons. The year 2017 was the first time she was elected the Quebec representative to the Permanent Delegation of Canada at UNESCO.

Maria Mourani is also the author of La face cachee of Gangs de rue (October 2006) A book about street bands in Montreal. She followed that up with an additional book on street gang networks across Canada, United States and Central America entitled Gangs de rue inc. (September 2009).

She declared her candidacy in the Bloc Québécois leadership election that was held to choose a successor to Gilles Duceppe and ran on a platform of making the Bloc more independent from the Parti Québécois. She was defeated on the second ballot by former MP Daniel Paillé on December 11, 2011.

After the 2011 federal election Mourani was one of only four Bloc Québécois MPs left in the House of Commons, the only Bloc member from the Montreal area, and the only female Bloc MP in the 41st Parliament.

She was elected to the Canadian federal election in year 2006 in the Canadian federal election. She was then elected again in 2008 and in 2011. The result was that she was appointed an official of the Bloc Quebecois Critic on Public Security and on the status of Women in the Canadian Parliament.
