Maria Filatova is one of the most popular and richest Artistic Gymnast who was born on July 19, 1961 in Leninsk-Kuznetsky, Russia. Maria Evgenievna Filatova (Russian Mariia Evgen’evna Filatova) was a former Soviet gymnast who competed in the 1976 and 1980 Olympics.
Filatova was one of the most prominent Soviet gymnasts after the Olympics and the retirements several high-profile gymnasts such as Olga Korbut and Ludmilla Turischeva. Filatova won the 1977 and 1978 World Cups, the 1977 USSR Nationals and the 1977 and 1979 Riga International meets. Filatova was the lead-off gymnast in several events at the 1980 Olympics and helped to win the gold medal for the team. Filatova continued on to the 1981 World Championships where she was the silver-medalist in the all around.
Filatova was initially named an alternate for the Soviet team at 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. She was able to get such positive reactions from the crowd during podium training that she was made part of the team roster. After the team competition, she was awarded the team gold medal. She was also ranked ninth overall. Despite her high placing, she was not allowed to advance to the AA finals because four of her teammates scored more than her and only three gymnasts per group were allowed to compete at the all-around.

Filatova started competing in the USSR junior team’s events in 1974. She placed fourth at the 1976 USSR National Championships. In addition, she competed well at various international events.
David Hunn, a British journalist, described Filatova in this way: “Fifteen- year old in the Korbut tradition.” Filatova, a Korbut, was well-known for her energetic, expressive floor exercises and difficult acrobatics. In 1975, she was the first female gymnast to compete in a double back somersault.
Following her retirement in 1982, Filatova worked for several years with the British Gymnastics Federation (in Belfast) before moving to the United States. She now lives and coaches in Rochester, New York.
