She was a prominent member of United Russia. She was his “special assistant” in that year. They lobbyed the council for expanded gun rights in 2012. Butina was forced to resign as head of Right to Bear Arms late 2014.

Beginning in 2011, she worked as an assistant for Aleksandr Torshin, a former member of the Federation Council, a member of Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party, and a deputy governor of the Central Bank of Russia. In this role, she worked to infiltrate conservative groups in the US, including the National Rifle Association, as part of an effort to promote Russian interests in the 2016 United States presidential election. In April 2018, Butina told the Senate Intelligence Committee that Konstantin Nikolaev, a Russian billionaire, provided funding for her gun-rights group.

In 2013, she met Republican political operative Paul Erickson in Russia. The two became close, started dating, and eventually moved in together. In 2015, she emailed him a description of a proposed project to influence the Republican Party to be friendlier to Russia, through the NRA. In January 2015, Torshin became deputy governor of the Central Bank of Russia, and Butina worked as his special assistant until May 2017. In 2017, Butina told The Washington Post that she never worked for the Russian government.

RFE/RL interviewed Russians to find out that the organization was well-known for its support of Putin’s cause during the Russian protests in 2011-2013. Putin had also stated to Russians that he was “deeply convinced” that firearms free flowing would bring great harm to the country. He also said that he believed that it would be a danger to the government if the “free flow” of firearms continued. US prosecutors charged Butina with conspiracy and acting as an agent foreign. They claimed that her love for guns was a scheme to promote Russia’s agenda within Republican Party. Right to Bear Arms was described by Anders Aslund as a “front organisation with the goal of infiltrating American organizations and forging cooperation the NRA.”
