She will succeed Pascal Lamy, who ends his term in 2013. In early 2013, the General Council of the WTO received nominations from a variety of countries. After several rounds, the selection process was concluded with all three nominees from the Asia-Pacific region being eliminated in late April 2013. Mari Pangestu graciously accepted the results of the selection process.
Pangestu has had extensive policy-making experience in Indonesia. Following her period as Minister for Trade, in a cabinet reshuffle in October 2011 she was appointed to the newly created position of minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, a post she held until the term of the administration of president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono finished on 20 October 2014.
Mari Pangestu, a late 2012 travel agent, expressed hope that Indonesia would welcome 10 million tourists from abroad in 2014. After the financial problems of 2011 and 2012 in Europe, there has been a decline in tourists visiting Indonesia from Europe. She said that the government hopes that foreign tourists will arrive from the Asia-Pacific region to offset the decline in European tourists. She emphasized the importance of China’s market, where she stated that 70 million outbound tourists had visited China in 2011.

Mari Pangestu was born in Jakarta. She received her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the Australian National University. In 1986, she earned her doctorate in economics at the University of California at Davis. Prior to being appointed Minister of Trade in 2004, she was a prominent staff member at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta and participated for a long time in trade forums like PECC. She is considered one of the best- known economists on trade issues in Indonesia. She is also an instructor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Indonesia.

In December 2013, in recognition of her achievements as an economist and policy maker in Asia, Mari Pangestu was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Australian National University (ANU). While visiting Canberra to receive the degree she recalled her years as a student in Australia when her father was academic staff member at the ANU.
