Kalev Tallinn, the Soviet Union Basketball League’s winner, was the biggest breakthrough. He became the last official champions of the crumbling empire. In fact, there was an identical league that existed the next year but only Commonwealth of Independent States clubs were allowed to compete. Kalev won with an 18-4 record in the regular season. They beat ASK Kyiv by 2-0 in quarter-finals (90:75, 100.91), and then went on to face Latvian BK VEF Riga in the semi-finals. While the Latvian team won the initial game 94-87 (90:75, 100:91), Kalev managed to win the next two (107:90 and 113:96) and make the series overall 2-1. The finals saw the Estonians win both games against BC Spartak Saint Petersburg, and Kalev Tallinn won the Soviet championship.

In 2001, 40-year-old Metstak scored 8.3 points and took 6 rebounds per game, when Estonia finished in the disappointing last place. Margus Metstak is to date the oldest basketballer to play at the EuroBasket.

Metstak briefly played for Korisliiga’s NMKY Lahti team in late 1990 before returning to Estonia in Jan 1991. After the great victory, Metstak returned to Finland for one season before moving to Luxembourg’s Amicale Basket. Margus Metstak was a key figure in Estonia’s EuroBasket 1993 success in Germany. He received offers to play for Paderborn Baskets and TSV Speyer in Basketball Bundesliga. He signed his final contract with an international team, the Polish side Czarnislupsk, in 2001-2002 at 40.

Metstak’s national basketball career began in 1981 when he was a member of the Estonian SSR team. He was a center for Estonia’s national basketball team in 1991 after Estonia gained their independence from Soviet Union.

Margus Metstak began his career as a teenager with Tallinn Pedagogical Institute. He played in Estonian SSR Championships up until the collapse of the Soviet Union. He improved and he went on to play professionally with the Soviet Union’s top-flight Soviet Union team Kalev Tallinn. The team reached the semi-finals at the Soviet Basketball Cup in 1982, his second year of professional basketball. In 1993, the Estonian team surprised all of Europe, winning group D ahead of eventual European champion Germany and strong ex-Yugoslavian side Slovenia. In the knock-out stages they lost to Russia, beat Bosnia and Herzegovina and were beaten in the 5th-place game by Spain. This meant that Estonia would not qualify to the 1994 FIBA World Championship.
