Margo Oberg is one of the most popular and richest Surfer who was born on September 8, 1953 in Pennsylvania, United States. Margo Godfrey was conceived in La Jolla on September 8, 1953. At the age of ten she began surfing and competed at the 1965 Western Regional Surfing Championships. She won her division (San Diego female resident). In 1966, she won the Menehune Championships 12-and-under division. She was the only girl in that division. She was also coached by Mike Doyle, a former World Champion, during this first stage of her career. In 1968, she switched from longboard surfing to shortboards.
Oberg founded her surfing school, Margo Oberg Surf School on Kauai, in 1977. Her surf school is still owned and operated by her. She wrote a chapter in a book about competitive surfing strategies for women.
She was inducted into the International Surfing Hall of Fame in 1991, and the Surfing Walk of Fame as that year’s Woman of the Year; the Walk is in Huntington Beach, California. In 2000, she was ranked 99th on Sports Illustrated’s list of the Top 100 Women Athletes of the 20th century. In 2001, she was inducted into the Hawai’i Sports Hall of Fame. In 2018, she received the “Silver Surfer Award”, a lifetime achievement award from the California Surf Museum.
In 1974, she won a contest in Malibu and returned to surfing. She competed with six other women in the men’s Smirnoff contest in 1975. She won $1,000, becoming the first woman to receive a payment for surfing. In addition, she signed a contract with the surf brand Lightning Bolt, continuing her professional career. She won the professional world championships for women in 1975, 1976 and 1977 as well as 1980, 1981 and 1983. She won the WISA Hang Ten Championships as well as the women’s event at Smirnoff World Pro-Am Surfing Championships. She was “unofficially”, crowned Women’s World Champion in 1976 and 1977. She won at the Bells contest as well as the Coke, Brazil International and Women’s Masters. She won the Bells and the Stubbies contests in 1978 and was first in the overall Surfer magazine poll. (She had won the poll the first time in 1968). She competed professionally until 1991 when she was fourth at the world championships.

Margo Oberg, born Margo Godfrey on September 8, 1953 in Pennsylvania, was the first professional female surfer in the entire world. At the age of 11 she won her first competition and at 15 won her first title in the world. She became the first female professional surfer in 1975.
She was California’s top-ranked women’s surfer at 15 years of age. She won the 1968 World Contest, Puerto Rico. In 1969, she successfully defended her title. She was dismayed to have finished second in the 1970 World Contest in Australia. Later, she said that the loss was so severe that she had to retire. She graduated high school in 1972 and married Steve Oberg. In Hawaii, she taught surfing and ran a concession stand.
She is the mother of two sons, Shane Kainoa (born in the early 1980s) and Jason Kaipo (b. 1987). She has identified herself as a Pentecostal Christian, and would seek out churches while traveling. She said, “I didn’t care about the doctrine that much — I liked the fellowship.”
