After graduating from the University of Padua, she was awarded a degree as a philosopher and married and had two children. Cogo started her career in middle school as a teacher of humanities and then later became a literature professor.

She was re-elected in 2008 to the position, but she did not stand for renomination 2013. She was elected President of the Scuola Musice Giudicarie in 2014.

She was elected to the Regional Council of Trentino–Alto Adige in 1998 and became the first female President of Trentino–Alto Adige/Sudtirol Region in 1999. Ethnic conflicts arose during her term. She worked to resolve them through initiatives to preserve the autonomy of the region, and reform the electoral code. She resigned as president in 2002 and returned to the seat she held in the assembly. She focused her efforts on education, equality, state welfare programs, and policies related to health and human rights. She was elected Vice President for the region in 2003 and Councillor of Culture in 2003. {In that capacity, she worked to create the Museo della scienza She was the first female Vice President of the region and the Councillor of Culture. This project was designed to restore monuments and buildings throughout the region, including Fort Cadine, Buonconsiglio Castle’s Loggia del Romaino, Malga Palazzo Nature Reserve, Scanuppia, Rabbi, and the Torre Vanga at Trent. It also established museums in the surrounding area.
