Margaret Mhango Mwanakatwe served as the Zambian Finance Minister between 14 February 2018 and 14 July 2019. She was previously a bank executive, an accountant and a businesswoman. She was the director for Anglophone Africa business development at the United Bank for Africa’s Lagos, Nigeria headquarters. She was responsible for business development in Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She was previously the chief executive officer and managing director of United Bank for Africa Uganda Limited, from March 2009 to May 2011.

Mwanakatwe, a Member of Parliament, was appointed Minister of Commerce by President Edgar Lungu on February 2, 2015. In a cabinet reshuffle on February 4, 2018, she was named Minister of Finance. Mwanakatwe has extensive banking experience, which she can use to bring value to the Ministry of Finance and restore investor confidence, as well as to help create new economic partners. Mwanakatwe, as Minister of Finance has given her department the task of working effectively to meet the expectations of the electorate. Mwanakatwe requested that her staff devise a systemic plan to address domestic arrears. In addition, she asked officials to develop a plan that would pay salaries on time to public servants. She also praised the team’s commitment to increasing domestic resource mobilization.

After completing her education in Zambia, she began work at Barclays Bank of Zambia. She was promoted to the role of managing director. She was the first Zambian chief executive and the first female chief executive at Barclays Bank of Zambia. She was also the first female CEO of all African Barclays Bank subsidiaries. She was named managing director and CEO of Barclays Bank of Ghana in 2004. She served that role until 2009.

She left Barclays Bank in 2009 to join the UBA as managing direct and chief executive of United Bank for Africa Uganda Limited. She was also the UBA’s regional business director for Southern Africa. She left UBA Uganda in 2011 and was transferred to UBA’s Lagos, Nigeria headquarters as director of business development for Anglophone Africa.

She was relieved of her duties as Finance Minister by President Lungu on 14 July 2019.
