Jackson and Julie Gross became the first Australian women to earn All-American honors while playing college basketball at the University of Texas. Jackson was also selected for the US national team that year. Jackson declined several lucrative offers to become a professional to return to Australia and play for the Opals in the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The Opals were unable to qualify for the Games after failing in the pre-Olympic Qualification Tournament.
Jackson received a physical education scholarship to play at Louisiana State University basketball after a 1976 trip of the United States with New South Wales’ state basketball team. Jackson was a sophomore in 1978 and scored 1,021 points (25.5 PPG) and grabbed 539 rebound (13.5 RPG). Jackson’s 1,021 points, 539 rebounds and 13.5 rpg are the highest single-season totals in Southeastern Conference (SEC), and LSU history. Jackson’s 1,852 point total in just two seasons with Lady Tigers is third all-time. Jackson finished her career as the second-leading rebounder at LSU with 1,032 rebounds. Jackson’s career average of 26.4 points per game was still the SEC record.

After a 1972 women’s tournament in Sydney, Jackson met Gary Jackson, an Australian basketballer. Lauren Jackson, their first child, would be the number one pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft. She would go on to be Australia’s most decorated and successful basketball player.
