After serving a two match suspension, his league debut finally came on 1 September 2012, in a 3-0 loss against Exeter City. However, he suffered a hamstring injury during a match against York City on 19 September 2012. Holness missed the 2008-09 season due to injury. His first appearance of 2008-09 season was on October 10, 2008 in a 1-1 draw against Lincoln City. His first opportunities on the team were limited. He only made six league appearances for Rochdale in 2008-09. Holness was loaned to Conference National team Barrow for a month during January 2009.
