He competed in athletics and won the gold medal at the 200m at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. He also won silver and gold medals in the 4×100 metres relay at both the 1990 Commonwealth Games (and the 1990 European Championships). He is also part of the relay team that holds the British record for the 4×200 metres relay.

Adam achieved a personal best time in the 100 metres in July 1991, clocking in 10.23 seconds at a meet in Birmingham.

At the 1992 Summer Olympics, Adam reached the final of the 200 metres, finishing in eighth place with a time of 20.80 seconds. He was also a member of the British 4 × 100 m relay team which finished in fourth place. Domestically, Adam won the bronze medal in 100 metres at the AAA Championships, and at the UK Championships he won the bronze medal in 100 metres and the gold medal in the 200 metres.

Adam’s international breakthrough was in the 1990 outdoor season. The 1990 Commonwealth Games was a highlight of the season. Adam was fourth in the 100m event with a wind-aided time 10.14 seconds. This is 0.02 seconds slower than bronze medallist Bruny surin. The 200m was won by Adam with a wind-aided 20.10 seconds. He finished ahead of Ade Mafe and John Regis, both English athletes who came in second and third. Adam could not run faster than these two Commonwealth Games wind-aided times. Along with Clarence Callender and John Regis, Linford Christie won a second medal in the 4x100m relay. Adam was also a participant in the 1990 European Championships. He reached the semifinals of the 200m and won a silver in the 4 x 100 meters relay. Linford Christie, John Regis, and Darren Braithwaite were also part of his victory. This British record of 37.98 seconds would remain until 1993.
