Boogers spent a decade in the Netherlands and was particularly prolific in the second tier Eerste Divisie. In July 1995, he joined West Ham United from Sparta Rotterdam, even though West Ham manager Harry Redknapp hadn’t seen him play before. In his second appearance at the club, Boogers was substituted against Manchester United at Old Trafford. He was nearly immediately dismissed for a violent rib-high tackle on Gary Neville. It was a “horror attack” that the press called and suggested that Boogers was hired by Manchester United to injure a player. Boogers claimed that the wet grass caused him to slip too much and that Neville was able finish the match. However, he was still suspended for four matches. He was substituted against Aston Villa in November, a 4-1 defeat. His last match was against Blackburn Rovers on December 2, a 4-1 loss. He did not play in a West Ham league match; all four matches were played as a substitute.
Boogers was temporarily loaned to Groningen in February 1996. However, a few days before his first match, his knee problems returned. He was forced to re- enter the hospital for treatment until March 1997. Boogers was still contracted at West Ham but knew that he would not be playing there again. The club was his last visit in February 1996, and he never returned.
After retiring as a player, Boogers worked for hometown club Dordrecht as technical director. His position was under threat, after he infamously clashed with then coach Jan Everse over Boogers’ behaviour in 2015. The book Koning van de Krommedijk (King of the Krommedijk stadium) was written about Dordrecht’s 2014–15 Eredivisie season, but primarily about Boogers.
