Marcela Donoso Biography

Marcela Donoso is one of the most popular and richest Painter who was born on February 16, 1961 in Concepción, Bío Bío Region, Chile. Marcela Donoso, a Chilean, was born February 16, 1961 in Santiago. She spent part her childhood in Venezuela and the United States, before returning to Chile in 1970. She attended the Concepcion steel artists’ workshop between 1972 and 1973. Between 1984 and 1988 she studied at the University of Chile School of Art, where she was instructed by Adolfo Courve. She received her degree as an artist with a focus in engraving and painting. Between 1989 and 1991, Donoso was in Mozambique (Africa) where she studied under Malangatana Ngwenya, an artist. She learned Portuguese and created many works. One of her works was an iron monument to the Heroes for Mozambican Independence (1990), a mural at Inhambane Airport (1989), and a commemorative wall in a government building in the same town. She was also part of an art show organized by the Mozambique Association of Friendship and Solidarity with the People, and a UNICEF Artistic Development Project to help child war victims. She also worked for Handicap International.

Under the auspices the Chilean Embassy, she led a series open workshops at Sala 508 South, Brasilia, Brazil, 1999.

The itinerant exhibit Iconography of Myths and Legends of Chile, inaugurated at Montecarmelo Cultural Center in July 1998. It was also shown at the Cultural Center of Puente Alto and the University of Concepcion. This same work was also exhibited in Brasilia at Centro Cultural 508 and in Brazil at the Latin American Memorial, both under the patronage of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These are both individual samples. The Latin American Painting Exhibition at Brazil’s Latin American Memorial was sponsored by the Consulate of Chile, 2000. Latin American Religious Art also featured part of Patronos de Chile and Some Spells at Brazil’s Academy of Art and Culture in March 2001. The book Iconography of Myths and Legends of America is published in 2002. The UDLA inaugurated the Iconography of Myths and Legends of America exhibition in April 2010. This same work was also presented at the Palace of Courts of Justice in September 2010 as part of the Bicentennial Exposition of Chile’s Supreme Court of Chile.
