He began his career as a young man, working as a journalist, paperboy, and draftsman (1999, 2000-04). Marcel van Hattem was elected Dois Irmaos city councilor at 18 years old as a Partido Progressista (far right Brazilian party).

Marcel is a journalist, MTE number 16.646 from 19 November 2012. From 2003 to 2004, he began his career as a reporter and paperboy at Dois Irmaos’ local newspaper. He is an invited contributor to Voto magazine and contributes to Brazilian media by writing opinion articles and interviewing renowned international experts. Marcel was the foreign correspondent for the Oslo, Norway newspapers Zero Hora and Estadao. He also covered the Nobel Peace Prize to Brazil’s news in 2012.

In the 2014 elections, van Hattem received 35.345 votes, taking office later on, at the age of 29, as the youngest Assemblyman of the Rio Grande do Sul State Assembly.

Marcel also has great interest in foreign activities and events related to the promotion of democracy in universities, entities, think tanks, and political parties. He followed the Argentinian (22 November) and Venezuelan elections (6 December) in 2015 as an international observer and in 2016 he went on a mission to the Netherlands, in order to analyze the possibilities of using the unexplored river potential for transportation in cooperation with the Dutch government.

Van Hattem was at the Brazilian Congress in Brasilia from September 2009 to July 2011. He ran again in 2010 for the Rio Grande do Sul State Assembly. Marcel received 14.068 votes in 288 cities, which helped him increase his polling numbers. He received his Master’s degree in Political Science from Leiden University, Netherlands in 2012. He began working for the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture, and Innovation (Hague) later in his career. He completed a master’s degree in International Journalism at Arhus University, Denmark one year later. He began a master’s degree in journalism, media and globalization in 2013.
