- He is a five time World Cup overall champion and excelled in all five disciplines of alpine skiing.
Girardelli won 11 races in 1985 and the World Cup overall title. He was followed by another title in 1986 and a final in 1989. He was almost paraplegia-free in 1990 after another major accident. In 1991, he won the overall again and in 1993 for a record fiveth time. This record stood until Marcel Hirscher won a sixth title (Annemarie Moser Proll won six women’s World Cups). Girardelli won 46 World Cup races, which was the fifth-most among men of all time. He also had 100 podiums.
His final World Cup race was in the downhill race at Val Gardena on December 20, 1996; he had announced his intention to start the next day in another downhill, but suffered a new knee injury. After failing to start in the following races, he announced his retirement from international competition in January 1997 at age 33.
He is an organiser of skiing events in several European winter sports resorts, and also in Portillo, Chile. Since 2005, he is an IBO for kids fashion in sports, called »Marc Girardelli Skiwear«. Since 2005 too, he is married to Andrea Palenov – the former couple and its two children are living in separation (cit. German Wikipedia).
In February 1983, he won his first World Cup win in Sweden. Two weeks later, he suffered his first serious injury. He had torn all his ligaments and cartilage in his left knee after a fall during a Lake Louise downhill. He won five slalom races the next season and finished third in overall standings.

Girardelli was born in Lustenau, Austria. He started skiing at age five and was racing at age seven. At the junior level, he won numerous competitions in both alpine skiing and ski jumping. He represented Austria from 1976 to 1976. After disagreements over coaching, he switched to Luxembourg. The Austrian ski federation wanted Girardelli go to Schruns, a thirty-mile (50 km) away from Lustenau. His parents, however, preferred that he stay in his hometown. He made significant progress in 1981 with his first podium in Wengen, Switzerland. From that point on, he was competing for giant slalom as well as slalom podiums.
Girardelli, who was born in Austria and skied for Luxembourg, was not eligible to compete at the 1984 or 1980 Winter Olympics. He could also not compete at the 1982 World Championships. However, regulations allowed Girardelli to compete for Luxembourg in the World Cup. Although his appearance at 1985 World Championships was doubtful for a while, he was able show that he was working towards Luxembourg citizenship. He was granted special permission by the FIS and won silver in the giant-slalom slalom. Girardelli was granted Luxembourg citizenship to enable him to compete at the 1987 World Championships. He did not win a medal at his first Olympics in 1988 at Calgary. He won silver medals at Albertville in Super G, giant slalom and Super G in 1992, the Grand Duchy’s first Olympic medals since Josy Barrthel’s gold in 1500m in 1952.
Girardelli won eleven World Championship medals, including four golds: (slalom at Saalbach in 1991 and combined at Crans-Montana in 1987, Vail in 1989, and Sierra Nevada in 1996).
