He defeated Joel Benjamin, a former U.S. champion, in the New York Invitational Tournament on June 20, 2010. He defeated Loek van Youly at the 112th US Open in August 2011. At the age of 7, Esserman started playing chess. Two national team titles were won in Scholastic competition in 1994 and 1995. He was the K-8 cochampion after he won the Super Nationals in Knoxville (Tennessee) with a score of 7-0. Esserman was tied for 1st at the Florida State Championship in March 1999 with a perfect score.

He returned to Boston after graduation in 2008 to promote chess in Boston. He served on the Board of Directors of Boylston Chess Club, and represented Boston in the United States Chess League. He is a member the Boston Blitz and has a high winning percentage.
