In July 1994, he was promoted to Director Force Concepts and Director of Land Requirements at NDHQ. He then became Chief of Staff of Kosovo Verification Mission of NATO in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in Nov 1998.

Lieutenant-General Joseph Henri Paul Marc (Marc) Caron is a former soldier from Canada. He was born June 1, 1954. Caron was an infantry officer in the Canadian Forces and Chief of Land Staff.
Caron joined the Canadian Forces in Oct 1971. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in May 1973 after completing the Officer Cadet Training Programme. As a junior officer, he served in the 3rd Battalion of Royal 22 Regiment, Quebec, from May 1973 to April 1974. He also served in the 1st Airborne Commando, Cyprus, from April 1974 to April 1975. From August 1976, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion Royal 22 Regiment, Lahr, Germany, and the Royal Welch Fusiliers, Lemgo, Germany, from January 1978. In 1981, he was a student at Shrivenham’s Royal Military College of Science, England, and in 1982, at Kingston’s Canadian Land Force Command and Staff College, Ontario.
He retired from the forces in June 2006 and was succeeded by Lieutenant General Andrew Leslie. Today he works for the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), within its International Security Sector Advisory Team (ISSAT).
