Maram al-Masri is one of the most popular and richest Poet who was born on August 2, 1962 in Lattakia, Latakia Governorate, Syria. Maram al-Masri, born 1962, is a Syrian writer who lives in Paris. She is known for being “one of most renowned, captivating, and feminine voices of her generation” (Arabic).

Maram al-Masri is a strong opponent of the Assad regime in Syria. She believes that every decent person is with Revolution. Based on images from the civil war, her poetry book Elle va la liberte (Freedom, she goes naked) (2014) was written. Although she describes herself as an Atheist she supports the use of religious slogans during the Syrian uprising because it is a “last option” for people who are brutally oppressed under a dictatorship.

She has been awarded several prizes, including the “Adonis Prize”, the Lebanese Cultural Forum’s “Premio Citta di Callopezzati, and the “Prix d’Automne 2007”, both from the Societe des gens de letters.

Maram al-Masri was born in Latakia, a coastal city, to a prominent Sunni Muslim family. She studied English Literature at Damascus but had to stop her studies after falling in love with a Christian man. The man’s family opposed the relationship and Maram al-Masri fled Syria in 1982 to marry a Syrian. She divorced him later. Her book Le rapt focuses on the fact that she was unable to visit her son for 13 year because he was taken to Syria after her remarried. She also had two more children with her French husband.

From a young age, she wrote poetry “to distinguish herself among the other girls” and “to attract attention”, publishing her poems in Damascus literary magazines. Her 1984 first collection, entitled “I alerted you with white dove”, was published. However, her breakthrough in the public eye came in 1997 with A red cherry on white-tiled floors, which was published by Tunisia’s Ministry of Culture. It was rejected by Syrian publishers as too erotic. The book was first published in Spanish in 2002. This received a lot of positive feedback and was reprinted several times. Soon after, English and French translations were available. Maram al-Masri began to publish in France regularly and started writing poetry in French. Her writings are not addressed to Arab readers because their language and thoughts differ from mine, but most of her work remains in Standard Arabic.

Her poetry has been described as “direct, unadorned writing, with its emphasis on the quotidian”, where the “utilization of simple, almost child-like metaphors, contrasts sharply with the conventions of traditional Arabic love poetry”. “That a woman write so unreservedly about sex” also “lends a fresh, unexpected quality” to her poetry. The Guardian described her as “a love poet whose verse spares no truth of love’s joys and mercilessness”
