She was a mathematician and author. Her mathematical focus was on invariant theories, which can be summarized as the study and analysis of group actions and their fixed point.

Professor Neusel had long-term memberships in both the American Mathematical Society (USA) and the Association for Women in Mathematics (UK). Neusel organized a special session “Homological Algebra and Its Application” at the 2005 Meeting of the American Mathematical Society in Lubbock Texas. Also, he co-organized a special section on “Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry”, at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Association for Women in Mathematics at Brown University in 2011.

Professor Neusel is the author of a research monograph and an advanced undergraduate text. He also wrote a memoir for American Mathematical Society: Invariant Theory. Invariant Theory’s exposition “stands out for its masterly clarity and comprehensiveness as well as its profundity, profundity, and didactical disposition.” Neusel was a member of the editorial boards of Advances in Pure Mathematics and International Journal of Mathematics and Applied Statistics. Neusel was a tireless advocate for women and girls in mathematics and established Emmy Noether High school Mathematics Days in May
