Gretkowska’s latest work is more personal and almost intimate prose. Polka (Polish woman), 2001 was Gretkowska’s pregnancy journal. Europejka (European Woman), (2004) is a humorous look at a changing Poland from the perspective of Gretkowska, the intellectual. Scenes from Extramarital life was a collection of scenes that the author and her partner Piotr Piotucha created in 2003. Manuel Gretkowska wrote a column in Success three years later, critical of the Kaczynski brothers, who were at that time the President and Prime Minister of Poland. This text was literally cut out of every copy that appeared in the issue.

Gretkowska left Sweden in 1997 to publish a collection of stories entitled Namietnik (The Passionate one) (1998). She also published notes from her travels around the world in Swiatowidz World-View (1998) and her columns under the collective name Silikon (Silicon (2000)). The screenplay for the TV series Miasteczko (“Small Town”) was also written by Gretkowska.

Manuela Gretkowska was a Lodz native and studied philosophy at Jagiellonian University, Krakow. She left Poland in 1988 to study anthropology at the Ecole des hautes etudes en sciences sociales. She returned to her homeland in the 1990s as deputy editor-in chief and literary director of Elle. Elle, Cosmopolitan and Wprost were her publications.

The writer was dubbed “scandalist”, “postmodernist” during this time. Manuela Gretkowski’s prose was more like the simplicity and austerity of an essay, but without the grandiose language. Gretkowska was the screenwriter for the 1996 film Szamanka (She-Shaman) by Andrzej Zulawski.

In 2007, Gretkowska transformed the social movement “Poland is a Woman” into a new Political party – the Women’s Party (Partia Kobiet), from which she ran a failed campaign in the Polish and European parliaments. In October 2007, after the party’s defeat in the parliamentary elections, she resigned the party’s leadership but remains an “honorary leader”.
