Manuel Lobo Antunes is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on June 27, 1958 in Lisbon, Lisbon District, Portugal. His father, a Professor of Neurology at Lisbon who was also a Nobel Prize winner, was born in Lisbon on June 27, 1958. Antunes was the youngest of six children, his brothers being writer Antonio Lobo Antunes as well as neurosurgeon Joao Lobo Antunes.
In 1996, he returned to Lisbon to be Director for Sub-Saharan African Affairs. He also held other positions within the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs such as Diplomatic Adviser for Prime Minister Antonio Guterres (2001-02), Director General of EU Affairs (2004-05) and Deputy Representative at the Convention on the Future of Europe.
In mid-2006 it was announced that Antunes would move from the Ministry of National Defence to the Portuguese Foreign Affairs Department as Secretary of State for European Affairs, where he oversaw Portugal’s presidency of the European Union, and was one of the main negotiators of the final phase of the Treaty of Lisbon.
Antunes announced in 2008 that he would leave frontline politics and revert back to a diplomatic career, and was accordingly appointed as the Permanent Representative of Portugal to the European Union, a senior diplomatic post he held until 2012.
Antunes, who was then a secretary in the Portuguese Mission at the Hague, left Portugal in 1988 to start his first overseas assignment. He was later sent to Harare, Zimbabwe, as a Councillor.
