Sarmiento sustained injuries while playing with Seattle in 1980. He required season-ending surgery as well as rehabilitation for more than 18 months. In 1981, Sarmiento was traded to the Pirates. He was able to switch from the bullpen during part of the season and posted a 9-4 record, with 81 strikeouts, and 3.39 ERA record. Before returning to relief duty in 1983, he had a record of 9.4 runs.
