Mandali Mendrilla, a 1996 graduate of the Rijeka Faculty of Philosophy in English, decided to finish her studies. She received a Bachelor of Arts in English and Croatian literature. Under Kenneth R. Valpey’s tutelage, she learned Bhakti Yoga as well as traditional Indian arts. These studies led to many art projects such as collaboration with Chantal Boulanger, a British anthropologist, on Vrndavana – The Sari Experiment. Mendrilla is also inspired by ancient cultures, particularly from India. Mendrilla’s late husband, Elisha “Nitai” Drury, was an artist and Mendrilla became an integral part in some of the most important alternative festivals of the new millennium, including Wanderlust, Burning Man and Bhaktifest. Mendrilla created an entire collection in honor of his legacy. She was featured in the Croatian Fashion Week, Zagreb 2014 She also appeared in the Yoga journal to close the year. The British VOGUE magazine and Harper’s Bazaar featured Mandali’s luxury label in 2015. Mandali’s Wish Tree Dress collection, which was inspired by eastern traditions of Wish Trees in June 2015, was shown at the Croatian Fashion Week. Mandali was invited by the Belgian MOSA Museum to create a Wish Tree Dress after the fashion week presentation. Mandali created an interactive art installation, Mandala of Desires (Blue Lotus Wish Tree), made of peace silk. It was painted with eco-friendly textile ink and resembled a lotus flower. Visitors could hang their wishes from the branches. The dress was brought to India where it was given to a real wish tree in 2016. The Goloka Yantra Mandala and the thousand-petalled lotus petticoat of Bert Van Loo’s layered glass sculptures were the inspiration for the dress’s pattern. The dress was part of the “Forms of Devotion” exhibition at China Art Museum in Shanghai and the Museo de arte Contemporaneo in Madrid, Spain.
