Mamta Sodha, the eldest child of three girls and two boys, was born at Kaithal in Haryana, India on the 1st of November 1979. In 2004, her father, LaxmanDass Sodha, died. Her mother Mewa Devi had to support her family with the help her brothers.
The Everest project cost Rs 1.8 million. Mamta collected the money by way of contributions from several agencies and individuals such as Haryana state government (Rs 300,000), PWD Minister, Randeep Singh Surjewala (Rs 51,000), Kurukshetra member of parliament, Navin Jindal (Rs 500,000, District Police Commissioner Amneet P Kumar (Rs 250,000) and various others and the project started in April 2010, with the encouragement of previous Everest climbers Bachendri Pal and Santosh Yadav.|Mamta received contributions from various agencies and individuals, including Haryana state government (Rs 300,00), Randeep Singh Surjewala, PWD Minister (Rs 51,000), Kurukshetra Member of Parliament, Navin Jindal, (Rs 500,000), Amneet P Kumar, District Police Commissioner (Rs 250,000) and many others. The project was initiated in April 2010 with the support of Santosh Yadav and Bachendri Pal, former Everest climbers Santosh Yadav.} The expedition team was made up of 13 people, nine of whom were from the United States, Australia, Denmark, Switzerland, and Australia, and four others from India. Arjun Vajpai, 16, was also part of the group. Apa Sherpa was the team’s leader. He holds the world record for 19 climbs of Mount Everest. For acclimatisation, the team spent 40 days at Khumbu Glacier. This was where they had established their base camp. This was the traditional South Col route through Nepal. After stopping at three to four camps along the way, the team finally reached the summit around 20 May 2010. MamtaSodha reached Mount Everest at 10.24 AM on 22 May 2010.
After the successful Everest climb, Government of Haryana absorbed her into Haryana Police Force. Mamata Sodha is now a Deputy Superintendent of Police with Haryana Police since 11 August 2010.
Mamta Sodha is an Indian sportsperson, known for her successful 2010 attempt to scale Mount Everest. She was honoured by the Government of India, in 2014, by bestowing on her the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for her services to the field of mountaineering sport.
Mamta was a rock climber from a young age, which her father encouraged. She decided to climb Mount Everest soon after her graduation. For this purpose, she joined Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarakhand. She had previously scaled other peaks before embarking on this project. She was part of the IMF Golden Jubilee Expedition team that scaled Phawararang peak on July 2008. In October 2008, she was part of the IMF Golden Jubilee expedition team that scaled Phawararang peak in July 2008. Two months later, she climbed Mun Peak with another group while on an expedition to McLeod Ganj. She summited Shri Kanth Peak in August 2009 with an all-women group.

Mamta Sodha was also a skilled mountaineer. She was part of the Haryana state girls’ team that won runner-up at the 21st Junior Girls National Handball Championship held in Agra in November 1998. She was also a part of the Kurukshetra University handball team and won the All India Inter-University Handball tournament. She was elected by the Sports and Youth Welfare department in Haryana as a B1-grade sportsperson in Handball in 2003.
Mamta attended Kaithal’s local school and then went on to college at RKSD College in Kaithal, where she received her graduate degree. She also got high marks. In 2005, Mamta received her master’s in Physical Education (MPhEd), from Kurukshetra University. She then joined the Shaheed Baba Deep Singh College of Physical Education in Haryana as a lecturer.
She has also scaled other peaks of varying heights such as Morni Peak, Khüiten Peak, Inderhara Pass and Island Peak on various occasions. This was followed by an attempt on Idland (Imja-tse) Peak which she successfully accomplished in April 2010, just prior to the Mount Everest expedition.
