Tallack’s debut album, The Desert, was released in 2003. The Desert featured Steven Laurenson as guitarist, Michael Laurenson as bass, and Rory Tallack as drums. There were also appearances by Donald Anderson, Jenna, Bethany Reid, and Nancy Hunter. The album featured a mixture of fast-paced rock songs and acoustic tracks.
Tallack’s second album, Edges & Spaces, was recorded in eight months during 2005. Edges & Spaces features a variety of songs that highlight Tallack’s strengths and showcase his “increasing musical focus and lyrical maturity”. Many guest artists were featured on the album, including Jenna Reid and Grant Nicolson, Margaret Scollay, Abby Hayward, Lise Sinclair, Margaret Scollay, Grant Nicol, Margaret Scollay and Margaret Scollay.
He edited the magazine Shetland Life, and founded the online magazine The Island Review. He wrote a weekly column for the New Statesman about his experiences of rural life and living on a remote Scottish island, and has since published two books of non-fiction: Sixty Degrees North (2015), which was a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week, and The Un-Discovered Islands (2016), which won the Edward Stanford Illustrated Travel Book of the Year Award 2017.
