Maksim Matveyev was a native of Svetly in Kaliningrad Oblast in Russia, Russian SFSR and Soviet Union in Southern Russia. Maksim Matveyev graduated in 1999 from Saratov’s No. 2 high school with a silver medal. He had initially considered enrolling in a medical school to become a surgeon during his school years. However, he decided to go to the Faculty of Law of Volga Region Academy of Public Service instead. He was prompted to enter the theater department by an accident. Vladimir Smirnov, a student at Valentina Ermakova’s theater department, led the district ball of medalists. There were many games and competitions held that evening. Smirnov saw Maksim and gave Valentina her number. He then urged him to try his luck at the theater department. Maksim tried to pass two entrance exams at once, the Academy of Civil Service as well as the Saratov Conservatory’s theater department. He was then accepted into the theater and the next term.

Maksim Matveyev graduated in 2002 from the theatre department at the Saratov State Conservatory. Sobinov (V. Ermakova course). 2006 – Moscow Art Theater School (courses of Zolotovitsky & Zemtsov). He was accepted by the Moscow Art Theatre troupe after the school-studio ended. There, he played the role of Joffrey the knight.
