Wagefeld, upon his return to Dynamo was named club captain as the team tried to qualify for the 3. Liga, which was to open in 2008, was Wagefeld’s first appointment as club captain. After Eduard Geyer’s return as coach mid-season, they finished in eighth place. Ruud Kaiser replaced him in the summer. He continued to select Wagefeld frequently and the club placed 9th in 2008-09. However, the club was struggling in the following year and Kaiser was replaced with Matthias Maucksch, a former Dynamo player. Maucksch Wagefeld lost his captaincy to Thomas Hubener, and was then removed from the first-team picture for the 2010-11 season. Ralf Loose Wagefeld replaced Maucksch. He did not fare well. Dynamo won the promotion playoff against VfL Osnabruck and he was back on the substitutes bench. However, he couldn’t make it into the pitch.

Wagefeld made his Bundesliga debut in August 2004 as a substitute for Sven Muller in a 1-1 draw with VfB Stuttgart. In August 2004, Wagefeld made his Bundesliga debut for 1. Wagefeld was replaced by Hans Meyer in the second half of the following season, after Wolfgang Wolf was fired as manager. He returned to Dynamo Dresden in January 2006 on a six month loan. Although he made 14 appearances, he was not able to stop the club being demoted to the 2. Bundesliga. Wagefeld signed for Hansa Rostock, but he did not stay in the second tier. Wagefeld was not able to make a name for himself in the Rostock second-team and, after just eleven appearances as the club were promoted to runners-up, he signed for Dynamo Dresden.

Wagefeld, who joined Dynamo Dresden in 1994 as a thirteen-year-old, made it into the first Dynamo Dresden team at the end of 1999-2000, when Cor Pot was appointed as Dynamo’s manager. After a disappointing start to the season, the club needed to finish in top 7 of the Regionalliga Nordost’s third-tier. The division was being reduced from four to two regions. Wagefeld was substituted for Antoni Jelen in a derby against Dresdner SC on March 2000. Dynamo won 2-2 after coming back from 2-0 down. He played 12 more matches that season, winning 8 and losing 1 of them, but Dynamo ended up eighth and were relegated into the NOFV -Oberliga Sud.

Wagefeld was a regular in Dynamo’s first-team by the end of the season. Although the 2000-01 season was bright, the club couldn’t keep up with its rivals. FC Magdeburg and VfB Leipzig finished fifth respectively, Cor Pot losing his job. For the 2001-02 season Christoph Franke was appointed to lead the club to the title. After a playoff win over Hertha BSC’s reserve team, the club was promoted to the Regionalliga Nord. Wagefeld became almost an everyday presence in the team at this stage. He formed a partnership with veteran Steffen Hiedrich as a midfielder and they finished second in 2002-03, which saw Dynamo finish eighth. They were promoted to the 2. Bundesliga. Wagefeld, who was the club’s top scorer, with 10 goals, would not be playing at this level, having signed for Bundesliga side 1. FC Nurnberg.

In July 2011, Wagefeld was signed for Hallescher FC by former Dynamo Dresden coach Sven Köhler, where he re-united with former Dynamo teammates Benjamin Boltze, Pavel David and Darko Horvat. Again he was named as club captain, and made 33 appearances, scoring seven goals as the club won the title after a three-way battle with RB Leipzig and Holstein Kiel, securing promotion to the

  1. Liga. He was a key player during the 2012–13 season, but suffered an injury in August 2013 which ended his season, and his career with Halle – he was released in June 2014.
